Spinal tuberculosis, also known as tuberculous spondylitis or Pott’s disease, is a serious infectious disease affecting the spine caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This form of tuberculosis primarily targets the vertebral bodies of the spine, leading to destructive changes in the bone and adjacent soft tissues. Spinal TB typically starts when the tuberculosis bacteria spread through the bloodstream from another site in the body, usually the lungs, where a primary TB infection may have occurred. The bacteria settle in the spine, often affecting multiple vertebrae. Over time, the infection can cause erosion of the vertebral bones, leading to collapse and deformity of the spine. Common symptoms include persistent back pain, stiffness, tenderness over the affected vertebrae, and in severe cases, neurological deficits such as weakness, numbness, or even paralysis if the spinal cord is compressed.
